With the shower running
and the television on
and the coffeemaker brewing
you can mask how silent it is

you can substitute
a hastily scribbled note
for a real conversation

working opposite ends
of the same dinner party
for time spent together

but there's just no getting around
the immutable laws of physics;
if you don't add any heat
eventually the molecules just stop moving.
